About Breeding and Puppies at Birdsboro

We Love Our Dogs and Work Really Hard at Breeding…

Litters are only bred occasionally at Birdsboro, as we only plan breedings in an attempt to produce a Pointer or Spinone for ourselves that will help us in our endeavor to better the breed. Erin is a veterinarian and Kyle is an ecologist/stay at home dad with plenty of on the job dog experience. Our puppies are raised in our home (all of our dogs are housedogs) and well socialized with children (we have six kids thanks to the wonders of adoption), cats, and other dogs.  Our puppies are bred to be wonderful companions that have the potential to be a hunting buddy or show dog if their new families have an interest in that area.

Colors, Genders, Temperaments and Conformation…

We understand that many people would like to have a specific color or gender of a puppy (or any of the other criteria above).  We try our best to satisfy everyone’s needs when picking a puppy.  However, we ask that people be flexible with regards to their some of their criteria.  Since we breed for a variety of colors, we may not have the particular color/gender combination you desire.  Further, the most outgoing and boisterous puppy of the litter that we know would be perfect for your house full of kids and your perfect hunting buddy may not be your first choice of color (or even gender).  The more flexible our families are, the more families we can make happy.  We assess puppies for conformation and temperament at approximately five to eight weeks of age.  This can impact the type of home a puppy will be placed into (show or non-show) depending on the homes we have available, and which puppies we need to keep to continue and improve our breeding program.

Hunting Companions…

At Birdsboro, we think that all it should take to make a great basic hunting dog is exposure and kindness with common sense from the owner, not shock collars or a lot of knowledge about training.  By a basic hunting dog, we mean a dog that will hunt for you, not take off or hunt out of gun range, point and hold it until you can shoot the bird, and has a decent retrieve.  A Pointer that can swim is a bonus… this is expected of our Spinoni. We get dogs from lines that are able to do this, and aim to breed dogs that can do it just a little better.  Advanced training (steady to wing and shot for example), will require more work, but is of course doable.  We have trained Boone and Garrett (both steady to wing and shot) to a much higher level than is expected by most hunters.  Since having kids, we have not had the time to train our dogs to such a high level of competition (but they have the potential for it).  Our kids are getting older and we are in the process of fencing our six acre dog training area though… so we will get back to the hunting training soon enough.

What’s Included with a Puppy…

Our puppies all go home with age appropriate vaccinations, microchipped (which we register to us and pay for lifetime registration so it is of no cost to you), multiple dewormings, and of course a lifetime of veterinary and behavior advice whenever we are able to help out.  And of course they are bred from lines that we truly believe are healthy and have good temperaments… because we are not just breeding litters, but continuing our lines (which are our pets too). We do not breed often (one to three litters per year), and put a ton of love and time into our puppies.
