Meaning of Name: Steve means "crown".  I just always wanted to name a dog Steve!

Nicknames: Lemonhead

Special Talents: Steve picks up and carries anything and everything in his mouth.  He has a knack for fitting two or three objects in his mouth at the same time.  He also likes to jump up and stand on tall things (like hay stacks or bags of pine shavings).  He'll leap on top of them four feet in the air from a standing position.  But, luckily, he has manners and only does that outside!

About Steve

We got Steve from a breeder in Illinois.  She was having trouble placing the puppies in good homes, and so we took four pups from the litter into our rescue program, Pointers From Oz.  We found them all great indoor homes, including Steve.  But, after Steve's adopters had him for a week and a half, they called up to tell us that their son was highly allergic.  They knew that we required that Steve be an indoor dog, so they brought him back.  Well, the second time around we fell hard for this guy.  He was just such a good guy.  He was, and still is, calm and laid-back in the house, and loves tearing around and being a country boy outside.  For example, he's the dog that you open his crate and he slowly stands up, stretches, and then calmly walks out.  He has a lot of composure.  He seemed like he was born pointing.  From the time we got him, he pointed butterflies in the grass for hours on end.  And he's a dynamo on birds.  Steve has a great natural retrieve.  Steve carries his tail lower than most field dogs (just a bit higher than most show dogs).  He is a smaller dog, but very muscular and compact.  He has carried his weight and muscle well from the time he was very young.

Steve the Birddog

We are kicking ourselves that we never got pictures of Steve his first couple times out on birds as a little puppy.  He was a dynamo.  He would point staunchly, with his tail straight up as is desired in field trial lines.  If the bird moved, he would VERY slowly creep forward.  We had to laugh at him because sometimes he'd get his back foot stuck up in the air, rather than his front.  We have been letting him grow up and have fun in the field.  In 2007, we'll start more formal traning with him.  Steve's grandpa competed in the National Field Trial for Pointers this year.
